ASSESSMENTS

What is the assessment?

At The Petaway, before a dog can attend daycare, a thorough assessment is conducted to prioritize safety for all staff and dogs. This comprehensive assessment process, which lasts 3 hours, involves evaluating the dog's behaviour, temperament, and socialization skills to ensure they are not aggressive and are well-suited for a daycare environment. The assessment aims to create a secure and harmonious atmosphere where all dogs can interact and enjoy their time at the facility.

What does the assessment process look like?

At The Petaway, the assessment process is designed to ensure the suitability and safety of dogs before attending daycare. The assessment consists of two parts. The first portion involves a 30-minute individual assessment conducted in the assessment room. During this time, the dog is evaluated in three specific sections. The first level focuses on physical sensitivity, which includes assessing their response to touch from nose to tail and their reaction to collar and leash handling. In the second section, the dog is gradually introduced to other dogs within the assessment room, allowing the staff to assess their behaviour for any signs of aggression or reactivity towards other dogs.

The second portion of the assessment involves a two and a half hour period in a daycare room. Here, the dog's behaviour and reactivity are observed in a real daycare environment. This extended observation allows the staff to assess how the dog interacts, behaves, and adapts within the group setting. They pay attention to factors such as socialization, play behaviour, and general temperament to determine if the dog is well-suited for daycare and can safely integrate with other dogs. By conducting both the individual assessment and the daycare room observation, The Petaway ensures a thorough and comprehensive assessment process to maintain a safe environment for all dogs attending daycare.

How can pet parents be prepared for the assessment?

During the assessment process at The Petaway, it is important that pet parents bring their dog on a leash. This ensures a controlled environment and helps guarantee the safety of all involved. It's also important for pet parents to be prepared to pick up their dog at any point during the assessment if their dog fails to meet the daycare's suitability criteria. The highest priority at The Petaway is the safety and well-being of all dogs, including those coming in for assessment. If, at any stage of the assessment, a dog displays signs of distress, aggression, or overall discomfort, it is mandatory for the pet parent to promptly pick up their dog. This precautionary measure ensures a safe and secure environment for all dogs involved and helps maintain the daycare's commitment to the overall welfare and happiness of each individual dog.
